Parent Safety Training: Big Brothers Big Sisters of America requests all parents complete a “Pre-Match” training course. The course is approximately 1 hour long. It is a recorded webinar that covers the following:

  • Ground rules/program rules
  • The mentor’s obligations and appropriate roles
  • Expectations for the match relationship and relationship development styles
  • What match support is and why we do it
  • Child safety/youth protection
  • Ages and stages of child development
  • The match closure process

Volunteer Training: The safety of our Littles is our priority! All applicants to become a BBBSDE mentor must undergo:

  • A written or online application
  • A criminal background/DE Child Protection Registry check and three references
  • Mentor training (individual or group)

For the safety of both youth and volunteers:

  • Visits are to take place in the local community
  • Mentors are not allowed to take Mentees into their homes or overnight stays
  • While we love to see our Mentors and Mentees enjoy activities, all trips should remain in the state of Delaware
